We are looking for a Full Time Cook to become a key member of the dining team tasked with providing nutritious high-quality food to support a truly great dining experience for our residents.  

 

The Village at Mercy Creek, a part of Franciscan Ministries, is a vibrant Senior Living community in Normal, Illinois. Our Community offers assisted living and soon memory support, skilled nursing/long-term care and on-site rehabilitation clinic which will offer inpatient and outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapies, and state-of-the-art programs designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and patients in the local community. 

We are looking for a Full Time Cook to become a key member of the dining team tasked with providing nutritious high-quality food to support a truly great dining experience for our residents.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares food daily as outlined on the menus. Alters or adapts recipes to accommodate special dietary needs of residents or to improve recipes.  Ensures attractive presentation of food on the plate before serving.
  • Coordinates and participates in serving food.  Monitors portion control to meet residents’ requests and minimize waste.  Maintains an accurate record of chargeable meals (resident, guest and catered).  Submits record to the office by the designated date each month.
  • Assists with menu planning; reviews and adjusts menus with Dietary Manager to accommodate foods in season, vendor sale prices, special events and holidays.  Assists in identifying food and supplies needed for the next week’s menus and reports to the Dietary Manager.  Prepares meats for storage and portion control upon delivery; ensures proper storage of all delivered foods and ingredients.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe and sanitary kitchen environment.  Ensures proper handling, labeling and storage of food for infection control.  Ensures compliance with regulations
  • Assists in training other kitchen staff in food preparation.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Tasting food to determine quality and palatability.
  • Ensuring proper preparation, portioning and serving of foods according to standardized recipes.
  • Maintaining and recording assigned temperatures daily.
  • Directing and supervising Dining Aides when needed.
  • Having food ready at the specified time and beginning meal service on time.
  • Occasionally visiting residents in dining rooms, to gather their feedback regarding the meal served.
  • Following temperature regulations in preparing, serving and storing foods.
  • Using food service equipment correctly
  • Cleaning food service equipment after use. Completing other assigned cleaning, per posted department cleaning schedule
  • Ensuring supplies have been replenished in work areas as necessary.
  • Washing and storing all pots, pans, dishes and utensils.
  • Bussing tables and cleaning dining room, if needed.
  • Sweeping and mopping floors
  • Being responsible for opening kitchen, if needed, turning on lights, unlocking/starting equipment.
  • Being responsible for securing department doors/windows, turning off lights and turning off/locking equipment per facility procedures when closing kitchen for the day.
  • Attending and participating in in-service educational classes, department meetings and all staff in-services.
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of all residents and their care to ensure resident rights and privacy are protected at all times.
  • Serving as the employee in charge in the absence of the Director of Dining.
  • Complying with safety requirements, infection control measures, and maintaining a clean work environment in accordance with facility policy as indicated by:
  • Assuring that work/assignment areas are neat, clean before leaving such areas on breaks, end of work day, etc.
  • Following all safety procedures/precautions when using equipment.
  • Reporting equipment malfunctions or breakdowns to supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Reporting all unsafe/hazardous conditions to supervisor immediately.
  • Following infection control and universal precautions procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Some college or culinary school experience preferred
  • Residential/Commercial cooking experience
  • One to three years cooking experience in a geriatric environment.
